Why Build Schools in Africa?
Education saves lives. It gives children the skills they need to escape poverty, live healthy lives and have hope for the future. Simply going to school each day can transform the lives of children living in conflict. Every child deserves the right to an education, yet tens of thousands of children in Africa have never been able or allowed to go to school.
These children are at extreme risk; many are orphaned, the HIV rate is 30% and there is no adequate school. The research is clear: children in circumstances like these, especially girls, die without education.
There are 10.9 million girls in Eastern and Southern Africa who don't have the opportunity to go to school. Together, we can change that. It generally costs as little as $25,000 to build a modest building with a few classrooms to change an entire community and improve conditions for generations to come.

Our Projects
The Children's Academy for the Collective Heart
The Children's Academy for the Collective Heart School Project is a joint initiative between Just Like My Child, The Unstoppable Foundation and The Collective Heart. The aim of the project is to increase the access to and quality of education for children in Uganda and Kenya. The need for such an initiative is clear: in Sub-Saharan Africa alone 45 million children DO NOT HAVE access to a basic education. That is half of Africa's future trapped behind an insurmountable wall of ignorance, poverty and discrimination.
The "Children's Academy for the Collective Heart" project aims to build and create conditions that foster a learning environment for these children, and give them the ability to learn and take control of their future.
The Children's Academy for the Collective Heart school project wants to:
- Build and rehabilitate as many schools as possible each year;
- Offer a safe and protective environment where at-risk children can safely learn;
- Ensure that the children we are serving have access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities;
- Ensure that the children we are serving have the necessary supplies: books, pens, and sports materials;
- Train teachers to provide the children we serve a quality education and basic emotional education and life skills;
- Ensure that children we serve are informed about hygiene and health issues, HIV prevention, etc.;
- Reduce the educational gap between the sexes, and provide more opportunities to girls in each nation.
Project 1: The Children's Academy for the Collective Heart, "Beau's School" in Kitakamu Uganda
Built in partnership with Just Like My Child Foundation
- Completed block of 3-classrooms
- Completed 3-apartment block of teacher housing plus gardens for the teacher
- Hired qualified head-mistress and paid the salary for first year
- Classroom, supplies and hand-made desks and chairs for 150 children and teachers to sit at individual desks with textbooks and chalkboards and all the necessary supplies
- 12-pit latrine stalls (3 blocks of 4)
- NOTE: Additional staff, facility maintenance, school uniforms and lunches will be paid by school fees, community contributions and government grants
Project 2: The Children's Academy for the Collective Heart, St. Joseph Magogo, Uganda
Built in partnership with Just Like My Child Foundation
- Completed 2 blocks of 2-classrooms each for a total of 4 classrooms
- Completed 1 Office
- Completed 3-apartment teacher housing
- 12-pit latrine stalls (3 blocks of 4)
- Paid for teacher salaries for one year
Project 3: The Children's Academy for the Collective Heart, Pimbiniet, Kenya
Built in partnership with Unstoppable Foundation and Free the Children

- Completed 2 blocks of 2-classrooms each for a total of 4 classrooms
- Completed 1 Office
- Completed 3-apartment teacher housing
- 12-pit latrine stalls (3 blocks of 4)
- Paid for teacher salaries for one year
Project 4: The Children's Academy for the Collective Heart, "Beau's School" Phase 2 in Kitakamu, Uganda
- Work has begun on Phase 2 of Beau's school to build an additional 4 classrooms, teachers' housing and latrines for dozens more children to gain access to an education and the tools of transformation.
